In 1937, art and power collide in a rare clash that will change the face of Europe for decades to come. At the beginning of the year, the Spanish town of Guernica was bombed by the German air force. On June 30, Goebbels issued his decree "to segregate German folk art", the campaign against modern art. On July 18, Hitler inaugurated the "House of German Art" in Munich, one day later the exhibition "Degenerate Art" was opened. Erwin Leiser interviews art historians, dealers and contemporary witnesses such as Willy Brandt, tracks down lost paintings and shows the "Degenerate Art" exhibition reconstructed in Los Angeles - without propagandistic slogans.

Staged by Friedemann Fromm, this new prime time serial with main actors Anna Loos, Thomas Thieme and Burghart Klaußner is an emotional family drama, exciting political thriller and genre picture of the German capital in one sweep.The action’s central character is lawyer Susanne Kröhmer. While planning her private future with her partner, she gets the chance of becoming a candidate for the position of mayor of Berlin and prepares for competing with the city’s powerful ones. During this phase, however, she gets into conflict with her own father’s political interests, him being the leader of the conservative party.When finding out about some deceptive business practice with mayor-in-office Degenhardt, she feels urged to start on a journey back into her own past to find out truth. Alex, a journalist and good friend of hers from youth times, supports her in her confrontation with her past and her father’s criminal offences. One prime result during her search is, that transparency and honesty are hard to keep up within the political arena she is about to step into.

Peter Sommer is the candidate of his party for the chancellor position. And with two more weeks to go until the elections the demographs tell that there is nothing to stop him from winning. But on the way home from one of the election events, his car breaks down. Men with covered faces kidnap Sommer in the presence of his staff including his wife and daughter. They want ten million Deutschmarks. The first handing over by the party leader and friend Moll fails. The rest of the story is divided into three parts: Sommer's, his wife's and Moll's view. Gathering information about and recalling the past, all develop different theories about what really is planned.
